The Importance of Volunteers and Interns

100_0202 We rely on the passion and dedication of our volunteers to help us reach our goals. The majority of our operations are entirely engineered and executed by volunteers. No matter how small or large their role, volunteers are the most vital component of Thirdway.

What to expect as a Volunteer or Intern

Because volunteers are so critical to Thirdway, they often play a more active role and have a greater influence than they would at other NGO's. Thirdway strives to take advantage of the unique skills and interests of its volunteers to make their experience with our organization more meaningful. In pairing volunteers with projects they are passionate about, we also believe that our projects are more successful in impacting communities in need.

Our volunteers and interns come from all over the world and wear many different hats. Some work primarily on strengthening Thirdway’s infrastructure as an organization, researching and developing future projects, fundraising, and other 'organizational' projects.

Other volunteers and interns travel to Ghana to get involved and participate directly in our human rights initiatives. (See our projects page for more info) Many volunteers and interns work with both sides of our organization, first working to develop projects online or wherever they live and then putting them into action in Ghana.

Our Approach

The Thirdway ApproachCircle_of_Human_Rights

Thirdway is a wonderful opportunity for individuals or groups who want to get their hands dirty; who want to be directly involved in human rights projects that change people's lives. It is a people oriented approach where it is not just dealing with cases but actual contact with the real people and the real world. We encourage all independent, self-motivated, ambitious, creative and enthusiastic persons to join us!

There is no shortage of rhetoric about the importance of human rights in responding to poverty and hunger. This is the time to turn words into action.

Uniqueness

What is unique is that we have a flexible volunteer system which enables you to work from wherever you are. Our method of dealing with volunteers/Interns put the people on the ground and the volunteers/Interns central. We offer a very rich and challenging environment for the volunteers/Interns. They are given the freehand and the opportunity to be in charge from the initiation and development of the projects to the evaluation stage. This is our A-Z model of development.

Working Here

Working at Thirdway100_0205

To work at Thirdway does not imply that one has to be at a certain location. Employees, interns and volunteers can work from all around the world, from the comforts of their homes, libraries, schools, etc.

We do not feel it is necessary to force a regimented schedule upon our interns and volunteers; however, we ask our staff to have a commitment to responsibility and innovative ideas.

Each member of the organization can work independently but will also have access to all he other members.

Working from Ghana means executing projects on the ground in Ghana in one of our project areas. A necessary condition attach to working in Ghana is the ability to raise funds. We therefore advise Candidates to apply early enough to enable them prepare sufficiently for the trip.

Working in the virtual offices is working online and that you can work from anywhere in the world and the computer is your office.

Internships are also online easy to combine with your studies at your present location without relocating.

Developing your fundraising pages

One aspect of working within any non-profit effort is the need to address fundraising.  This can be challenging  for many because it involves asking people for their hard earned dollars to address a problem they may either not be aware of., or not fully understand  More importantly, they will also want to develop a sense  of your role in this effort and how their contribution will be used to address the matters at hand.

The Thirdway web site provides information and a general overview of the larger issues.  Making forward progress means we often need to break these down into smaller projects and initiatives that support the larger whole. Developing a set of personal pages within a Public Social Network that describe you and the cause you support will help you to communicate your proposition. The information that follows will help provide an outline for the information it should provide.
